According to Harold Koontz and O’ Donnell, Management is a process of designing and maintaining an environment in which individuals working together in a group, efficiently accomplish selected goals.

1.      Production/Efficiency oriented

2.      Decision oriented

3.      People oriented

4.      Function oriented

 

1.     Production/Efficiency oriented Definition—

Those who had put forward the concept of mgmt. as a source of efficiency in organization have viewed that mgmt. is concerned with generating efficiency in organizational setting.

According to F.W Taylor, “Management is the art of knowing what you want to do and then seeing that it is done with the best and cheapest way.”

 

2.     Decision oriented—

Theorist have seen Management  process in term of decision making.

According to Peter Ducker,

Mgmt. is decision making.”


3.     People oriented—

Management is defined as process of coordinative efforts of people in an organization. Management is direction of people and not things. Management is personnel Management

According to Koontz, “Mgmt. is an art of getting things done through people and with people in formally organized group.”


4.     Function oriented definitions –

It focus on various function performed by managers in an organization.

According to Henry Fayol, To manage is to forecast and to plan, to organize, to coordinate and to control.”
